Lunch & Learn
Spring 2016 Lunch & Learn is a monthly event at UCSB in which graduate students present their research to a general audience of their peers, ranging from the humanities and the social sciences, to STEM fields. I presented a 15-minute talk on my research to this general audience. |
MRS Meeting Scene Reporter
Spring 2015 The Materials Research Society (MRS) Meeting Scene provides a snapshot of scientific presentations and events at MRS Meetings. At the MRS Spring 2015 Meeting, I served as a reporter and I wrote brief summaries of a wide variety of technical talks, often completely outside of my field of knowledge, aimed at general science audience. MRS Science Communication Workshop Spring 2015 I participated in a day-long workshop, sponsored by MRS, focused on communicating science to non-scientific audiences, both verbally and in writing. A piece I submitted for the workshop was chosen as an example of effective communication of a complicated science topic to a lay audience. |
Family Ultimate Science Exploration Volunteer
2013 – 2016 Family Ultimate Science Exploration (FUSE) nights are interactive events where junior high school students and their families participate in science activities related to physics, chemistry, and biology. As a FUSE volunteer, I led workshops on the principles of sound generation and the principles of photonics (the science of light). |
NanoDays Volunteer
2014 – 2015 NanoDays is a nationwide event aimed at educating the public on nanoscale technologies and their potential impact on society. As a NanoDays volunteer, I engaged K-5 students and their families in interactive activities about microscopy techniques used to image nanoscale objects. |
Santa Barbara Science Fair Judge
Spring 2014 The Santa Barbara Science Fair brings together hundreds of students from all over Santa Barbara County to compete for monetary prizes, and for advancement to the nationwide California Science Fair. I served as a Science Fair judge, interviewing junior high students on their projects and judging the quality of their projects. |
